Is resolution important?
Resolution is the measure of pixels (or dots) on the screen, a higher resolution (or more pixels) is recommended for large screens sizes when a high detail or high definition image is required.

Standard television is encoded in a low resolution so it will not matter what resolution your television has. A high resolution television can not increase the quality of a low resolution broadcast.

Digital television is a different matter as the resolution is generally higher and varies depending on the type of set top box being used and the input signal. A High Definition set top box would output a higher resolution than a standard definition set top box.

For a 30-40" television we recommend a 1366 x 768 resolution.

Is contrast important? How much do I need? [top]
Contrast ratio is a measure of the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black that the monitor can produce. The most common contrast ratio found in LCD televisions is 700:1.

Many LCD televisions offer a 1000:1 contrast ratio which results in more shades of grey and therefore higher detail on darker images.

What are DVI & HDMI connections? [top]

Some new televisions and high-end monitors now include HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and DVI (Digital Video Interface) connections that transmit digital signals to and from your television or lcd panel. HDMI is the newer of the 2, the main difference is that HDMI not only transmits video but also transmits digital audio signals through the one cable, thus reducing the amount of cabling required. A DVI connection is the digital alternative to component, svideo (SVHS), and composite cabling that has traditionally been used for transmitting video signals. A digital connection is less prone to interference and therefore offers an increase in image quality and sharpness.

What is response time (ms)? [top]
A response time on LCD televisions is simply a measurement (in milliseconds) of how fast each pixel can respond to colour changes. Generally a response time 20ms or slower is considered poor and can result in motion blur when fast moving objects move across the screen.
We recommend a time between 8ms and 16ms for television/movies with the optimum being 8ms.

Is the brightness level important? [top]
The brightness level on a TV is only of importance when being used for a retail display or when there is excessive ambient light. Generally it is not a big issue to focus on when purchasing a unit for the home as LCD's are very bright and the differences between models is usually only slight. Most TV's have a brightness rating from 400-500nits.

What is the Viewing Angle? [top]
Due to the restrictions with the technology, LCD and Plasma panels are subject to a Viewing Angle. Simply put, this is the angle you can view the image at before it becomes dark or off-colour. If an LCD has a low viewing angle (ie 120-130 degrees) when viewed from the side it would appear very dark or not be visible at all.
Viewing angles are stated for each model for the horizontal and vertical angles. The horizontal angel is stated first followed by the Vertical angle (EG: 160/130 = 160 horizontal and 130 vertical).
Generally the Vertical viewing angle is not as important as the horizontal angle. We recommend a 160 or higher horizontal viewing angle for most uses.

Do speakers come with each television? [top]
Some televisions come with side or bottom stereo speakers inbuilt to allow home users to save on space by using the inbuilt speakers instead of having large separate speakers. These speakers only come on some models so please ask if you are unsure. Many panels do not come with speakers and therefore should be connected to a speaker system.

Does each panel include a TV Tuner? [top]
Most listed televisions will include an analogue TV tuner, there are a few though that are a TV panel without the tuner it will be called an LCD monitor in the televisions section. If it does not have an inbuilt tuner it must be connected to a set top box in order to watch TV on the unit. For a panel to be stated as a television it must be designed for video/movie use by meeting the image quality requirements as determined by our technical staff.

In order to watch digital television a SD or HD set top box is required. These are available through this website here.

Is there anything else to look out for ? [top]
Whilst it may not affect all units, some TV's and large panels may require stands and/or wall mounts (if required to be mounted). Most TV's now come with a stand to sit upright on a table however if you are unsure please ask our staff.

Before purchasing, whether from us or a competitor, please feel free to contact us to discuss the monitor you are thinking of purchasing. We like to ensure you are getting the monitor that's right for your needs. Many resellers and retailers only hold some models and therefore attempt to sell what they have in stock. At Just Monitors we have a massive quantity of stock available, stored in distribution warehouses in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth. We are therefore never pressured to sell one particular model or 'what we have lying around'.
